Rembrandt and Hollywood Lighting
After walking past the studio for 6 weeks, it was really great to get in and start learning how the equipment works. The first task that Kate set for us was to practice Rembrandt and Hollywood Lighting styles, using hard and soft lighting.
Rembrandt Lighting
ISO 100, f. 6.3, 1/60
This is Rembrandt lighting with hard light.
I found this lighting style a little bit difficult to get, but finally after moving poor Phil in one direction to another, I got a triangle under the eye (and I think I might have even got a bit of catch light in that eye too). After getting this photo, Kate informed us that our White Balance was still on Auto and that we needed to set it to Tungsten (opps) so as a result Phil has an awesome looking tan. Also I realized that the ISO on my camera was not set at the same one as the light meter, changing it from ISO 100 to 400 (opps again).
ISO 400, f.8.0, 1/100
This is Rembrandt light with soft light.
After getting home, I realized that I hadn't gotten a Rembrandt with soft light, so during Workshop 2 I asked Phil if I could have another go getting soft lighting Rembrandt, and sure enough he agreed (thanks Phil, your the best).
There is a little triangle under his eye and I was got catch light in it too. I also remembered to change my White Balance.
Hollywood/Butterfly Lighting
ISO 100, f.5.6, 1/80
This is Hollywood/Butterfly Lighting with hard lighting.
This image was set to Auto White Balance, which is why Kai looks even more tanned than usual. I found this style of light quite easy to achieve. The butterfly shadow is half way between nose to lip.
ISO 400, f. 5.6, 1/80
This is Hollywood/Butterfly Lighting with soft lighting.
The soft light is much more flattering for this particular style, it makes the facial features appear more natural and even. Again, the butterfly shadow half between nose and lip.
Thanks Phil and Kai, you guys were great. Cheers
Carleigh
